Artist statement
Cheryl is interested in how human experience can be understood through the material culture of textiles. All though human history, clothing and dress have provided a tacit, culturally embedded form communication. As climate change becomes a more pressing issue, Cheryl’s work ponders how a lived experience of climate disruption could be reflected in a culture’s textile products. She imagines an embroidery workshop that makes such supposed fashion accoutrements. The End Begins Atelier repurposes the waste of a culture of disposability into statement pieces for customers who wish to communicate their distress about climate instability and prepare for the unprecedented events of an uncertain future.
